First Water is deploying ceramic drip filters in pilot projects with governmental and non-governmental organisations in Cambodia, Bolivia, Sierra Leone, and Colombia. We aim to determine the acceptability and effectiveness of drip filters fitted with ceramic filter elements from different manufacturers. First Water demonstrated low-cost ceramic water filters at the 3rd African Aid, Disaster Management and Relief Expo in Johannesburg, October 22nd - 24th 2003.

The first meeting of a public-private partnership initiated by First Water to promote point-of-use treatment and improved storage was hosted by the WHO in Geneva at the end of February. The outcome of the meeting was the establishment of an INTERNATIONAL NETWORK TO PROMOTE SAFE HOUSEHOLD WATER TREATMENT AND STORAGE. You can read the concluding statement here. The establishment of the network was announced formally at the Third World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan in March 2003. Further meetings of the network are planned for later in the year.
