Delegates at the 2002 Earth Summit in Johannesburg re-affirmed a millenial commitment to reduce by one-half the proportion of people without sustainable access to adequate quantities of affordable and safe water.

One of the most promising approaches to achieving this target is to enable people to treat water in their own household through 'point-of-use' water treatment. Gravity-fed ceramic filters ('drip filters') and chlorination are two of the most promising methods for point-of-use water treatment. First Water offers unrivalled expertise in the deployment of low-cost ceramic drip filters.

Clean water must be kept clean - improved collection and storage containers reduce the risk of re-contamination. First Water supplies the well-known OXFAM bucket and a wide range of top quality rigid and flexible water containers. First Water also supplies a range of chemical treatments based on the bactericidal properties of silver ions either used alone (MICROPUR) or in conjunction with chlorine (FORTE).

First Water aims to develop, promote and supply a range of products for the safe disposal of excreta. We currently offer a basic portable latrine and we plan to introduce a range of sanitation products in the near future.
